Japanese people live life purposely so that life doesn’t overwhelm them. This is how they avoid rioting when calamity hits. This is why they clean the stadium after the World Cup. It’s not because they are “good”, it’s because they are “aware”.
For all their bluster and frothing mouths, Conservative Evangelicals care nothing for moral conduct. They just don’t. They only want public proclamations of faith and loyalty to the tribe.
This is the worst part of the story: that Evangelical Conservatives perfectly understand how horrifying and abusive it is and yet they still adore it.
Maybe they will laugh at you. Maybe they will call you stupid. Maybe they will call you crazy. But you have to keep saying it.
What Sola Scriptura means is that your experiences don’t matter. What you experience in life is irrelevant.
My purpose is not a broadside swath of attacks against Christianity at large or even Evangelicalism in the broad sense. It is therefore important that I distinguish between groups to avoid offending innocent parties or repel potential allies.
Is it a “cult” if the group is socially accepted? I’m not sure. I’m inclined to think not. “Cult” has an almost automatic, socially negative connotation.
